There are two categories of motivation, negative and positive. Negative motivation works in an emergency, but not for a lifetime. The fear of failure or punishment can motivate people for brief periods. But it is not a firm foundation to build a life. Positive motivation, on the other hand, is value-driven and much more effective. When there is balance between our values, goals, and strategies, taking action is not difficult. We become extremely productive! It is only when these things are out of alignment do we struggle. To stay positively motivated, begin by examining your core values. This is where so many people struggle. Here is an example: We might state we value being ambitious, because we “think” we should value ambition, but in reality we actually value relaxing and vacationing more. So, it is important to get real clear your values, and determine what is most important to you. Next, create a plan, and then work your plan. Develop a MAP (Multiple Action Plan) or action list. Most people know they should have written goals, but fail to take time to develop a detailed strategy. A great plan will help you stay motivated. Finally, make sure your daily and weekly actions actually reflect your values. If you value financial security, do your daily and weekly spending habits reflect that value? When you can see that your actions and habits are reflecting your values you will be motivated to do more. To stay positively motivated make sure your core values, long term plans, and daily actions and habits are in alignment. When you can say to yourself, “Day by day I am getting better and better” you will find that it is easy to stay positively motivated all the time. Motivate yourself to new heights this week, Kevin |
